15 Colour palette ideas for your Squarespace website

When selecting colours for your Squarespace website, you will first want to consider your brand, to make sure the colours represent your business and attract your ideal customers. If you are just starting out and haven’t yet developed your brand, you will need to consider questions such as:

  • How would you describe your brand? Use 3-10 adjectives and/or short phrases. E.g. Empowering, supportive, warm, approachable, authentic, compassionate, calm, trustworthy, feminine, uplifting.

  • Who are your ideal customers? Think about location, gender, age, and any other characteristics they would likely have in common. Then think about what would appeal to these customers.

  • How do you want your customers to FEEL when they engage with your brand or land on your website?

  • What makes your brand unique?

  • What is the purpose or “why” behind your brand?

  • What are your brand’s key values and guiding principles?

If you already have an established brand, then you will want to incorporate your brand colours in your website colour palette. You may also need to add some additional colours, to provide the full range that your website needs.

Squarespace has 5 main colours in its colour palette:

Squarespace colour palette showing 5 colours from lightest to darkest
  1. Lightest
This is usually an off-white that matches the tones of your other colours. It is used for light backgrounds and for text that is shown on dark backgrounds.

  2. Light
This is a pale colour, mostly used for backgrounds that will have text overlaid.

  3. Bright
As the name suggests, this is a brighter colour and is often used as an accent colour for buttons and navigation bars, for example. It needs to contrast well with your other colours.

  4. Dark
This can be a darker colour, often used for backgrounds. However, it doesn’t have to be dark if you prefer lighter, brighter colours - it should just be darker relative to your other colours.

  5. Darkest
This is usually an off-black and is used primarily for the colour of your text, so it is important that it is readable. Pure black is very harsh, so I don’t recommend this. A dark grey or navy works really well.

To help get you started and provide some inspiration when choosing your colours, I have created 15 colour palettes that would work well on a Squarespace website.
